Though my educational career began in California, Asia had been my home for over two decades. I lived and worked in Japan, Hong Kong and China (twice), where I taught or administered in schools with students from more than thirty countries. With the exception of my first year in the classroom – spent in the public schools of Patterson, CA – my experience has been in college-preparatory international schools with high academic standards.
My educational philosophy has been shaped by the International Baccalaureate (IB) the Primary Years Program (PYP), which focuses heavily on authentic, inquiry-based learning experiences, self knowledge, and engagement with community. In many ways the IB is the antithesis of the “chalk-and-talk” approach to education typical in many public schools.
For more than 25 years The Laureate School has embraced an approach to education that builds character and achieves academic success. Those who came before me created a nurturing and engaged school community in which administrators, teachers, parents and students work in concert toward a shared mission. It is this community – with its curious students, dedicated teachers and supportive parent community – that attracted me to The Laureate School. I look forward to maintaining its strong traditions.
