Kindergarten Letter

Welcome Kinderparents!

Next month your child will complete an important milestone in his/her life - the first day of Kindergarten! We are getting excited and I know the children are too as the day approaches.

We look forward to speaking with you in detail at Back-to-School Night on Wednesday, September 9, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. In the meantime, the following information may be helpful:

  • Parent/Teacher Relationship - Our hope is that you will always feel comfortable talking to us about any concerns you have during the year. You may call us at school (533-2141) or e-mail us at ndauterman@laureateschool.org. We will communicate through notes, telephone calls, newsletters, and conferences, oh yes, and in person!
  • School Arrival/Dismissal - School hours are from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., except for Friday when dismissal is at 2:00 p.m.
  • Labels - Please label all items (lunch boxes, clothing, etc.) that come to school. After a while, all those little pink sweaters start to look the same!
  • Clothing - Kindergarteners do best in comfortable clothes. Keep in mind that we have recess, P.E., and painting as part of our day. Shoes should be suitable for running. It's good to leave an extra sweater or jacket at school for those unexpected chilly days that we are prone to have.
  • No Back Packs - We have found that backpacks are not helpful in organizing the students. They become clutter on the floor since there is not enough room to accommodate them in our cubbies. Therefore, please do not bring backpacks this year. Important papers and student work will go back and forth in folders.
  • Nutrition - As you are probably already doing, please limit any sweets you include in your child's lunch. If your child eats only one or two items from his/her lunch, (which frequently happens) the choices should be healthy. We encourage the children to take home leftover food, so that you know what your child is actually eating. Kindergarteners do not use our microwave. We plan to have a healthy mid-morning snack provided for the students each day.
  • Sharing - Your child's sharing day will be noted in our first newsletter home. Some appropriate items to share are objects from nature, science, social studies, or literature (especially items that have to do with what we are studying). We prefer that toys be left at home; they are too distracting. We will have lots of "sharing" suggestions at Back-to-School Night. Our morning class meetings and other group times are usually opportunities to share news of lost teeth, found bugs, and the many other joys of being a Kindergartener.

The first month of school is a time for your child to adjust to a new schedule and life! Through the year, there will be significant mental and physical growth. You can work with us to nurture this process by continuing to read at home with your child, have your child to bed at an early hour, and provide him/her with a good breakfast.

We have met many of our wonderful new students and parents and look forward to meeting the rest of you soon. Please come by with your child to say hi and see your child's classroom during our Class Visitation and Parent Orientation Day on Monday, August 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Thank you in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Ms. Nancy Dauterman                Ms. Christiane Flores
